Chemical recycling
BioInnovation makes a major investment in research projects for a more sustainable textile industry.
Maria Ström, business manager textile & innovation at The Loop Factory will lead one of the sub-projects.
A sustainable textile industry
The overall goal with the Circular Textile Innovation initiative is to contribute to a more sustainable textile industry and to increase Sweden’s importance in this area as well as contribute to a circular, non-toxic, and bio-based textile value chain in Sweden. The three sub-projects focus on textile recycling and innovative fiber blends including yarn spinning techniques for bio-based raw materials and thus contribute to the vision of a circular bioeconomy.
Chemical recycling
The Loop Factory will lead one of the sub-projects “Chemical recycling of man-made cellulose fibers (MMCF)”. We are happy to be a part of the solution for a more sustainable textile industry and look forward to the opportunity to co-learn with the partners in the Circular Textile Innovations research projects. The project will study sorting techniques, dye management and various recycling processes as well as sustainability assessment. The chemically recycled textile material will be further developed in fibre-to-fibre textile recycling, packaging solutions, and as chemical building blocks.
– The global yearly growth of bio-based textile fibres like viscose, lyocell and modal is high and so is the need to develop efficient and robust recycling methods covering many different applications, says Maria Ström, business manager textile & innovation, The Loop Factory, who leads the sub-project.
Mechanical recycling
Together with a highly skilled partnership, The Loop Factory also participates in the sub-project “Mechanical textile recycling - Roadmap for Swedish process capacity”. The main purpose of this subproject is to move forward on the market and stimulate investments in Sweden. We have extensive knowledge and capacity in The Loop Lab regarding mechanical recycling of textile residual waste and look forward to assist the project.
The Facts
RISE will coordinate the Circular Textile Innovations research project and the sub-projects will be led by IVL Svenska Miljöinstitutet and The Loop Factory. The project is part of the strategic innovation program BioInnovation and is funded by Vinnova.
